Stone washing is a finishing process used to give a newly manufactured cloth garments a worn-in (or lived-in) appearance. Stone-washing increases the softness and flexibility of otherwise stiff and rigid fabrics such as canvas and denim.

The process uses stones to abrade the fabric being as it is being processed. The garments are placed in a large horizontal industrial washing machine that is also filled with large stones. As the washing  cylinder spins, the fabrics fibers are repeatedly impacted and beaten as the falling stones ride up the fins inside the drum and tumble back down onto the fabric.
